+−What is the best 3D printer for a complete beginner?

+−Is a 3D printer worth it?

+−How much does it cost to run a 3D printer?
Very little. Taking a 150 W published maximum as though it were drawn constantly, an eight-hour print uses 1.2 kWh, which is about 22 cents at the 18.34 cents per kilowatt-hour the US Energy Information Administration reported for residential customers in June 2026. +−How long does it take to set up a first 3D printer?
Roughly ten to fifteen minutes on a current auto-calibrating machine, consistently. A printer that needs assembling takes an evening. Either way, do not plan a print for the same hour the box arrives.
+−What filament should a beginner use?
PLA. It prints at low temperatures, sticks to a barely-warm plate, needs no enclosure and barely smells. Every source we read on beginner printing agrees. Our PLA picks compare three mainstream spools on their published tolerance and temperature ranges.
+−Why is my first layer not sticking?
Most often a dirty plate — the oil from your fingers is enough to stop plastic bonding. Wash it before changing any setting. The next most likely cause is a Z-offset slightly too high. The full list of fixes is ordered by likelihood and cost.
+−Should a beginner start with FDM or resin?
Filament, unless you specifically want tabletop miniatures. Resin resolves far finer detail and adds gloves, ventilation, an alcohol wash and a UV cure to a hobby you have not learned yet. The full comparison is here.
+−Do I need a multi-color printer to start?
No. Get comfortable in one color first — on most machines the multi-spool unit is a separate purchase you can add at any time, so buying it up front means learning two things at once. Our multi-color page covers it when you are ready.
+−Is PLA or PETG stronger?
It depends which kind of strength. PLA is stiffer — it resists bending. PETG is tougher — it deforms where PLA snaps, and it survives heat that would make a PLA part droop. The full comparison has both in one table.
+−How long does a 1 kg spool of filament last?
Twenty to thirty typical desk-sized objects for most beginners, because most useful prints weigh tens of grams. Your slicer reports the exact weight before you print. More on spool life here.
+−Does filament need to be dried or stored specially?
Not when new — reputable spools arrive vacuum sealed with desiccant. It matters once a spool has been open in a normal room for weeks, and PETG absorbs moisture much faster than PLA. Storage and drying covers the free version and when a dryer is worth buying.
+−Is a 3D printer loud? Does it smell?
Louder than a laptop, quieter than a vacuum, and rhythmic enough to be noticeable in a quiet room. PLA has only a faint smell; ABS and ASA are a different matter and want an enclosure. Where to put your printer covers both.
+−Do I need an enclosure?
For PLA, no. For ABS or ASA, effectively yes — those plastics shrink as they cool and lift off an open plate. The other reason to want one is noise and smell, which is about where the printer lives rather than what it prints.
+−Where should I put a 3D printer?
Somewhere solid, out of a draft, and not a bedroom unless the machine is enclosed. A flexible surface produces visible ripples in tall prints, and a draft from a window or vent causes corners to lift. Room-by-room guidance here.

+−Where do I download 3D models?

+−Is a 3D printer safe for a child?
With supervision, yes — the risk is burns from a nozzle around 300 °C and a bed up to 80 or 100 °C, not fire. Purpose-built children’s printers use an unheated plate and PLA only to remove most of that. The kids page covers which to buy.

What we did instead: read each manufacturer’s own specification page, cite every figure with the date we read it, compute running costs from published wattage with the arithmetic shown, and pull live prices rather than remembered ones.
