Easy First 3D Prints
Some models are forgiving and some are not, and the difference is entirely predictable from the shape. Here is how to recognize an easy print, and twelve that qualify.

The short answer
An easy print has a flat bottom, no overhangs steeper than about 45 degrees, a wide base relative to its height, and no fine detail. You can tell all four from a photograph before you download it. Coasters, trays, clips, brackets and boxes qualify. Figurines and thin towers do not.
How to tell an easy model from a hard one, before printing
The flat-bottom rule
If a model sits on the plate on a large flat face, most of what can go wrong has been removed. Bed adhesion is the number one first-week failure, and contact area is the number one thing that affects it.
The 45-degree rule
A printer builds each layer on the one below. A wall that leans out gradually is fine, because each layer still rests mostly on the previous one. Somewhere around 45 degrees from vertical, layers start hanging in mid-air and need supports.
You can eyeball this. Look at the model from the side and ask whether any surface is closer to horizontal than to vertical while having nothing underneath it. If not, no supports needed.
The footprint rule
Tall and thin is harder than short and wide, for two reasons: the part has less grip on the plate, and the printer’s own motion can wobble it. A 30 mm tower on a 10 mm base is a genuinely demanding print. The same 30 mm of height on a 60 mm base is easy.
The detail rule
A 0.4 mm nozzle cannot draw a line thinner than roughly 0.4 mm. Features smaller than that either vanish or come out as mush. Fine text, thin spikes and delicate lattices are all asking for something the physical hardware cannot deliver.
Twelve that qualify
All flat-bottomed, none needing supports. Times and weights are rough guides — your slicer gives the real figures for the specific model you pick.

The three features that make a print hard
Overhangs that need supports
Supports are scaffolding printed under an unsupported surface and then broken away. They work, and they add a whole category of new problems: they can fuse to the part, they leave marks, and removing them from a delicate model can break it. Avoid them for a fortnight.
Small contact area
Anything standing on a point, a thin edge or a narrow foot. There is simply not enough surface holding it down, and a knock from the print head is enough to detach it. A brim — a flat skirt printed around the base — fixes most of these, and it is the single most useful slicer setting for hard prints.
Long unsupported horizontal spans
Bridges. The printer draws a line across a gap with nothing under it, relying on the plastic cooling fast enough to hold. Short bridges are fine on any machine; long ones droop, and how much depends on your cooling.
Reading a model listing for difficulty
Model libraries show photographs of what other people actually printed, and those are more informative than the description.
- Photos of real prints rather than renders means somebody has actually made it and it worked.
- A stated print time and filament weight suggests the uploader tested it rather than exporting from a design program and hoping.
- “No supports needed” in the description is worth trusting when there are photos to back it up.
- A pile of comments about failures is the clearest signal there is. Read them before you print, not after.

Questions people actually ask

Something flat, wide and short — coasters, cable clips, a desk tray. A large flat bottom removes bed adhesion as a failure mode, and no overhangs means no supports.

Look at it from the side. If any surface is closer to horizontal than vertical with nothing underneath it, it will need supports. Below roughly 45 degrees from vertical, each layer still rests on the one below and prints fine.
+−Why did my tall thin print fall over?
Not enough contact with the plate, and the print head knocking it as it moves. Turn on a brim — a flat skirt around the base that massively increases the grip and peels off afterwards. It is the most useful setting for difficult shapes.

A slicer setting that prints an object as one continuous single-walled spiral with no infill and no layer changes. It is fast, uses little filament, and produces unusually smooth surfaces because the nozzle never stops and starts.
