How to 3D Print in Multiple Colors

There are three ways to get more than one color, and the cheapest of them costs nothing and works on every printer ever made. Here is when each is the right answer.

The short answer

For two colors stacked vertically, pause the print and swap the filament. It is free, it works on every printer, and it produces zero waste. You only need a multi-spool unit when the colors have to interleave within the same layers — and that is the version that costs time and filament.

Method 1: the filament swap (free)

If your model changes color at a particular height — a nameplate with a white base and black letters, a two-tone box, a sign — you do not need any special hardware.

Every slicer can insert a pause at a chosen layer. The printer stops, you unload the old filament and load the new one, and the print resumes. The whole operation takes a minute and it wastes nothing.

How to do it: slice the model, find the layer where the color changes in the preview, insert a color change or pause at that layer, and print. Have the second spool cut square and ready before you start — a squashed filament end will not feed cleanly.

The limit: this only works for changes that go all the way across a layer. A logo in the middle of a flat surface cannot be done this way, because the color has to change within the layer rather than between layers.

Method 2: paint it (nearly free)

Underrated, particularly for small details. Print in one color, then paint the raised or recessed features with a brush or a paint pen. For text and logos this is often faster than any printing method and gives a cleaner edge.

It works best on recessed detail, where the recess acts as a channel that keeps the paint where you want it. Acrylic paint adheres well to PLA and needs no primer for casual use.

Method 3: a multi-spool unit (the real thing)

A unit holding several spools that feeds them into one nozzle in turn, cutting and swapping the filament every time the color changes. This is what allows colors to interleave within the same layer, which is what the impressive multi-color prints require.

Two consequences follow directly from the single-nozzle design, and both are worth knowing before you spend money.

It takes longer. Each swap is a mechanical sequence: retract, cut, load, purge until the old color is gone. A model that alternates colors every few layers spends a large share of its total time doing that rather than printing.

It wastes filament. The purge has to go somewhere, and it goes into a waste block beside the model. The waste scales with the number of color changes, not with the size of the object, so a small four-color model can produce a startling pile of scrap.

The two settings that decide how much you waste

If you do have a multi-spool unit, these two settings control the purge more than anything else.

Purge volume. How much filament is flushed at each change. It is set conservatively by default because an under-purge leaves the previous color streaked into the new one. Going from a dark color to a light one needs far more purging than the reverse, and some slicers let you set it per color pair — which is where the real savings are.

What the purge is printed into. Most slicers can direct the flushed material into infill or into a sacrificial object rather than a discarded tower. Flushing into the model’s own infill, where it is hidden inside the part, converts a large fraction of the waste into something useful.

Filament choice matters more here

Four spools going through one nozzle means four chances for a diameter variation or a temperature mismatch to show. Sticking to one brand and one product line across all the colors removes that variable entirely. Questions people actually ask

+Can I 3D print two colors without a multi-material printer?

Yes, if the color changes at a particular height rather than within a layer. Insert a pause at that layer in your slicer, swap the filament when the printer stops, and resume. Free, and no waste.
