How We Pick
This is the most important page on the site. It is what the word 'best' in our titles rests on, and it is what we have instead of a test lab.

What we do not do
We have not printed on these machines. There is no lab, no shelf of review units, and no owned printers behind this site. We do not run “in our testing” behind any sentence, we do not publish star ratings derived from use we did not have, and we do not mark our editorial scores up as product ratings in any page’s structured data.
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty machines. We have not tested any, and we would rather say so than make the claim that is easiest to falsify. Fabricating hands-on experience is an FTC deception, and it is the first thing a competitor or a Google quality rater would check.
What we do instead
Five things, all of them checkable by you in about a minute.
- Compile published specifications from the manufacturer’s own documentation. Every build volume, temperature ceiling, speed and materials list on this site is read from the manufacturer’s own page, and every one is cited on the page with the date we read it. Where a manufacturer does not publish a figure, the table says “not published” rather than filling the gap.
- Read the manuals. The materials a machine is rated for, whether calibration is automatic, and what the manufacturer says it is not for — all of that is written down and almost nobody reads it.
- Do the arithmetic, and show it. Running costs on this site are computed from published wattage and a cited national electricity rate, with every input visible so you can substitute your own. See what your first month costs for the worked version.
- Track live prices and availability. Prices render from a live data layer, never from the text. Where we do not hold a current price, the page says “check price” and shows no number. A remembered price is a wrong price.
- Cite everything. Every page that recommends a product carries a Sources section with the pages we read.
The six criteria for a beginner pick
In this order. Each one states how we assess it and from what source.
1. How much of the setup the machine does for itself
The single largest predictor of whether somebody is still printing in six months. We read the manufacturer’s specification for automatic bed leveling, automatic Z-offset and automatic flow calibration, and we weight a machine that publishes all three above one that does not. This is a documented capability, not an impression.
2. How forgiving the first layer is
Assessed from the published bed temperature range, the build surface type and the leveling method. A higher bed ceiling and a denser leveling mesh are both measurable advantages for the failure beginners hit most.
3. What the machine is rated for
Read from the manufacturer’s own materials list, including what it says is not recommended. A machine rated ideal for PLA and PETG is a good beginner machine; a machine that lists ABS as not recommended is telling you something you should believe.
4. Whether it fits, physically
From published dimensions and weight, plus whether the design is a bed-slinger whose plate travels beyond the frame. A machine that does not fit the surface somebody owns is not a good recommendation at any price.
5. Total first-month cost, not sticker price
The machine plus filament plus the small number of accessories that prevent specific failures, plus the electricity arithmetic. Worked through on the setup cost page.
6. Help when it goes wrong
How large the community and parts ecozystem around a machine is. This is a judgment rather than a measurement, and we say so — it is the least precise of the six and it is genuinely important, because a problem thousands of people have already solved is a different kind of problem.
What the scores mean
Every product carries a “beginner fit” score out of ten and a handful of metric sub-scores. These are our editorial read of how well something suits a first-time buyer, taken off the published specifications against the six criteria above.
They are not test results, they are not a verdict on absolute quality, and they are deliberately not present in any page’s structured data. A score marked up as a product rating would imply testing we did not do, which is exactly the claim this page exists to refuse.
Why a pick can change
- A price moves. Our band pages are organized around budgets, and machines cross band lines.
- Stock disappears. A recommendation you cannot buy is not a recommendation, and we would rather feature a purchasable alternative than leave a dead button.
- A model is superseded. A stale roundup is worse than no roundup. Competitors currently rank with lineups nobody recommends any more, under fresh-looking date stamps, and that is the failure our review cadence exists to prevent.
- A manufacturer changes a specification. Firmware and hardware revisions happen, and our figures are dated so you can see how current they are.
Roundups are reviewed quarterly, the flagship monthly, and the gift pages weekly through the fourth quarter. Every page shows the date it was last reviewed.
How we are paid
Affiliate commission on purchases made through our links, at no extra cost to you. Amazon is currently our only retailer. No manufacturer pays for a placement, sees a page before it publishes, or influences the order of a list. How to tell us we are wrong
Email info@nozzleandbed.com or use the contact form. If a specification here is wrong, we will check it against the manufacturer’s page, fix it, and note on the page what changed and when. That correction policy is written down on our editorial policy page.
