The Best PLA Filament
Any mainstream 1 kg spool of PLA will get you printing. These three are the ones whose manufacturers publish real numbers, which is the only meaningful way to tell them apart without a lab.

What we did instead is on this page: the manufacturer’s own published specification for every pick, cited and dated; the arithmetic on what it costs to run, with the inputs shown; a live price rather than a remembered one; and a plain answer on who should skip each machine.
The short answer
Buy Overture PLA. It publishes the tightest diameter tolerance of the three at plus or minus 0.02 mm, its 190–220 °C nozzle range sits inside every stock PLA profile you will meet, and it ships vacuum sealed with desiccant. Honestly, though: any mainstream PLA will work. The brand matters much less than whether the spool is dry.
Why the brand matters less than you have been told
Mainstream PLA from the well-known manufacturers is chemically much the same material. What you are paying for is consistency — how tightly the diameter is held along a kilometer of filament — and winding quality, because a badly wound spool tangles and can ruin a print eight hours in.
That is why this page compares published numbers rather than impressions. We have not printed these spools, so an impression from us would be worth nothing. The tolerance figure and the temperature range are things the manufacturer commits to in writing, and they are the honest basis for a comparison.
The three numbers worth reading
Diameter tolerance
Every spool here is 1.75 mm nominal. The tolerance is how far from that it is allowed to wander. Overture publishes plus or minus 0.02 mm; HATCHBOX publishes plus or minus 0.03 mm; Polymaker publishes plus or minus 0.05 mm on PolyLite.
What that means physically: your printer pushes filament a measured distance and calculates how much plastic that produces. If the strand is thicker than expected, you get more plastic than the slicer intended, which shows as bulging walls and rough top surfaces. Tighter is better, and the difference between 0.02 and 0.05 mm is real without being dramatic.
The nozzle temperature range
Not just a compatibility check. The top of the published range is where you go when layers are separating — hotter plastic bonds more thoroughly to the layer beneath it. A filament that publishes 190–230 °C gives you 40 degrees of room to work with; 180–210 °C gives you 30 and a lower ceiling.
How it is packaged
Filament absorbs water out of ordinary room air, and wet filament pops audibly in the nozzle, strings between features and prints badly. Overture and HATCHBOX both publish that their spools are vacuum sealed with desiccant. That matters for a spool bought in advance and left in a cupboard, which describes most gift purchases.

What PLA is genuinely bad at
This is the part the packaging does not say. PLA softens at temperatures a hot car interior reaches easily. A phone mount left on a dashboard in summer will droop. A part that has to stay rigid outdoors in the sun is the wrong job for it.
It is also relatively brittle. It does not flex much before it snaps, which is fine for a bracket and poor for a clip that has to spring. Both of those are PETG jobs and the PLA against PETG comparison covers when to switch.
If you own a Bambu machine
There is one genuine argument for the house-brand spool, and it is not quality: Bambu Lab’s spools carry a tag the printer reads, so the profile is applied without you choosing anything. On a first spool, that removes settings from the list of things that could have caused a failed first layer. We go through whether that is worth it on the best filament for a Bambu A1.

The default answer to 'what filament should I buy'. A tight published diameter tolerance, a conventional temperature range every printer profile already expects, and it is sold everywhere. Nothing about it is exciting, which is the point.

What it actually is
PLA is the plastic beginners should print. It is stiff, it needs no enclosure, it barely smells, and it sticks to a plate at low temperatures. This is a mainstream 1 kg spool of it.

What is good about it
- +/- 0.02 mm published tolerance, which is as tight as mainstream PLA is quoted
- 190 - 220 C is squarely inside every stock PLA profile you will meet
- A 25 - 60 C bed range means it will stick even on an unheated or barely warm plate
- Vacuum sealed with desiccant, so a spool bought in advance is still dry when it arrives
What is not
- PLA softens in a hot car or a sunny window — this is a property of the material, not the brand
- Not the cheapest per kilogram once you start printing seriously
- Color consistency between batches of any budget filament is a real thing
- No filament is a fix for a machine that is not leveled
Skip this one if
Skip it if the part you are making will live outdoors or in a car. That is a PETG job, not a PLA one, and no PLA brand changes that.

What is good about it
- Polymaker publishes a full technical data sheet, which is rarer in filament than it should be
- 190 - 230 C is a wider usable window than most PLA quotes, which helps with layer bonding
- Consistent enough that a working profile tends to keep working on the next spool
- Widely stocked, so replacing a color mid-project is realistic
What is not
- The published diameter tolerance is +/- 0.05 mm, looser than Overture's quoted +/- 0.02 mm
- Costs more per kilogram than the budget spools
- The suggested 40 - 60 mm/s speed is conservative for a printer rated at 500 mm/s

What is good about it

What is not

- The quoted temperature ceiling of 210 C is low if you are chasing layer strength
- Not aimed at the very high speeds current machines advertise
- Nothing here is better than the alternatives; it is equivalent and familiar

Questions people actually ask
+−What filament should a beginner use?
PLA. It prints at low temperatures, sticks to a barely-warm plate, does not need an enclosure and barely smells. Every source we read on beginner printing agrees, and most of the failures beginners hit with other materials are failures PLA would not have produced.
+−Does expensive PLA print better?
Marginally, and less than people expect. What you are buying is a tighter diameter tolerance and better winding. The single biggest variable in how a spool prints is whether it is dry, which is about storage rather than price.
+−How long does a 1 kg spool of filament last?
Longer than you think. Most useful desk-sized objects weigh tens of grams, so a kilogram commonly covers twenty to thirty of them for a beginner. Your slicer reports the weight before you print, so you can check any specific model.
+−Does filament need to be dried?
Not when it is new — reputable spools arrive vacuum sealed with desiccant. It becomes a real issue once a spool has been open in a normal room for weeks, and PETG absorbs moisture faster than PLA. See storage and drying.
