What to 3D Print First

The sample model was fun for an hour. Here is what to make next, ordered by how much each print teaches you for the least filament and the least waiting.

The short answer

Print a Benchy, then print something that solves a problem in the room you are sitting in. The Benchy takes about an hour, uses a few grams, and shows you more about your machine than a calibration cube can. The second print is what keeps you interested, because a printer that makes useful things gets used.

What makes a good first print

Four criteria, and almost every good recommendation is really one of them.

  • Under two hours. A first print is a feedback loop. A fourteen-hour model that fails at hour eleven teaches you nothing you could not have learned in ninety minutes.
  • Flat bottom, no supports. Supports are a separate skill. Learn to get a clean first layer before you learn to remove scaffolding from an overhang.
  • It fails visibly. A good early model shows its problems — a drooping bridge, a separating wall — rather than hiding them under a textured surface.
  • You actually want it. A cable clip for the desk you are sitting at beats a decorative vase that ends up in a drawer.

The ten, in order

1. 3DBenchy

A small tugboat, and the closest thing this hobby has to a standard test. It is deliberately full of difficult features in a tiny package: a smooth curved hull, an overhang under the bow, a chimney that tests how the printer handles a small cross-section, a bridge over the cabin, and text on the base.

Roughly an hour, well under 15 grams, no supports. When people ask for help with a print, “post a photo of your Benchy” is the standard reply because every one of those features fails in a recognizable way. Print one before you need one.

2. A cable clip or cable holder

Ten minutes, a few grams, and immediately useful on the desk you are sitting at. This is the print that turns the machine from a novelty into a tool, and the psychological effect of that is genuinely worth more than the object.

3. A phone stand

Twenty to fifty grams, an hour or two, flat bottom, no supports. It also introduces a real design consideration — the angle has to be right for a phone to stay put, which is your first encounter with a model where dimensions matter.

4. A calibration cube

A 20 mm cube with X, Y and Z marked on its faces. Twenty minutes. Print it, then measure it with a ruler if you have nothing better. If it comes out 20 mm in each direction, your machine is dimensionally honest and you can stop worrying about that whole category of problem.

5. Something with a hinge, printed in place

A small box with an integrated lid, or a printed clip. This is the first print that feels like magic: the hinge comes off the plate already working, because the printer laid down a deliberate gap the parts move within. It is also a good test of whether your machine holds tolerances, since too much squish welds the hinge shut.

6. A container sized to something you own

A tray for the screws in your drawer, a holder for a specific remote, a stand for a particular set of headphones. This is where 3D printing stops competing with buying things and starts doing something buying cannot: making an object for one specific situation.

7. A bridging test

A small model with horizontal spans across gaps. Bridges are the feature most likely to look bad, and they teach you what your cooling fan is doing. A model where the bridges droop is telling you something specific rather than being generally disappointing.

8. Something with text on it

A nameplate, a labeled box, a sign. Fine text is a genuinely demanding feature at 0.4 mm nozzle width, and it is the clearest possible read on how well your machine handles small details.

9. A vase-mode print

Vase mode — sometimes called spiralize — prints an object as one continuous single-walled spiral with no infill and no layer changes. It is fast, uses very little filament, looks far better than it should, and it produces beautifully smooth surfaces because the nozzle never stops.

10. A replacement for something that broke

A knob, a bracket, a clip, a foot for a piece of furniture. This is the point at which most people understand why they bought the thing. It is also the hardest of these ten, because it usually needs measuring, and it is where finding the right model becomes a skill.

When one of these fails

Which it will, and that is normal. Nearly every early failure is one of two problems: the first layer did not stick, or the filament did not flow as expected. The first has an ordered list of fixes on the bed adhesion page; the second is usually moisture, covered on storage and drying.
