The Best Filament for a Bambu Lab A1 or A1 mini
Bambu Lab publishes exactly which materials these machines are rated for, which makes this an unusually easy question. The interesting part is whether the tagged house-brand spool earns its price.

The short answer
Buy one spool of Bambu Lab PLA Basic, then buy whatever mainstream PLA you like. The house spool carries a tag the printer reads, so the profile is applied automatically — which is worth real money on your first spool, when you want settings off the list of possible causes. After that, any mainstream PLA prints the same.
What Bambu Lab rates these machines for
Unusually for this category, you do not have to guess. Bambu Lab publishes the materials list on its own specification pages for both the A1 and the A1 mini:
- Rated ideal: PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA
- Not recommended: ABS, ASA, PC, PA, PET, carbon-fiber and glass-fiber reinforced polymers
Read the second list as the manufacturer telling you what the machine is not for. Both are open-frame printers and cannot hold the chamber heat those materials want as they cool. It is a limit, not a defect, and it happens to match what a first year should be printing anyway.
The one real difference between the A1 and the A1 mini here
Bed temperature. The A1 publishes a 100 °C maximum plate; the mini publishes 80 °C. Both are ample for PLA, which is happy around 60 °C. Where it shows is PETG on a large footprint: a hotter plate holds a big part down for the whole print, and a part that lifts at hour four is a part wasted.
So on a mini, PETG works well on small and medium parts and gets riskier as the footprint grows. On an A1, that ceiling is higher. The full comparison is on the A1 against the A1 mini.
Is the tagged house spool worth it?
For your first spool, yes. Not because the plastic is better — there is no reason to think it is — but because the tag removes a variable. When your first print fails, you want to be able to say with certainty that it was not the temperature settings. On a tagged spool the printer chose them.
After that, probably not. You are paying a premium per kilogram for a convenience you no longer need, since by then you will have a working profile. Mainstream PLA from any of the brands on our PLA picks page prints identically once the profile is set.
One practical note: Bambu Lab sells refills as well as spooled filament, and refills need a spool you already own. So the first purchase has to be the spooled version, which is another small argument for buying one house spool at the start.

What it actually is
Bambu Lab's own house PLA. The spool carries a tag the printer reads, so temperature and flow settings are applied without you choosing anything. Refills are the same filament without the reusable spool.
Does it fit this page?
The spool tag means the printer applies the profile itself, which removes settings from the list of things that could have caused a failed first layer. On a first spool that is worth real money.

What is good about it
- The spool tag means the printer picks the profile, so settings stop being a possible cause of failure
- Bambu Lab publishes a technical data sheet with the actual numbers on it
- A low 35 - 45 C bed range, which is gentle on textured PEI plates
- Refills exist, so you are not buying a plastic spool every kilogram
What is not
- Costs more per kilogram than a generic spool of the same plastic
- The tag reading only helps on a Bambu machine — on anything else it is ordinary PLA
- Published speed guidance is under 300 mm/s, below the printer's own rated maximum
- Refills need a spool you already own, so the first purchase has to be the spooled version

Skip it if you do not own a Bambu printer. Everything you are paying extra for is the tag, and on any other machine the tag does nothing.

The default answer to 'what filament should I buy'. A tight published diameter tolerance, a conventional temperature range every printer profile already expects, and it is sold everywhere. Nothing about it is exciting, which is the point.

What it actually is
PLA is the plastic beginners should print. It is stiff, it needs no enclosure, it barely smells, and it sticks to a plate at low temperatures. This is a mainstream 1 kg spool of it.
Does it fit this page?
Its published 190-220 C nozzle range sits comfortably inside the A1's 300 C ceiling, and the plus or minus 0.02 mm tolerance is tighter than the house brand publishes.

What is good about it
- +/- 0.02 mm published tolerance, which is as tight as mainstream PLA is quoted
- 190 - 220 C is squarely inside every stock PLA profile you will meet
- A 25 - 60 C bed range means it will stick even on an unheated or barely warm plate
- Vacuum sealed with desiccant, so a spool bought in advance is still dry when it arrives
What is not
- PLA softens in a hot car or a sunny window — this is a property of the material, not the brand
- Not the cheapest per kilogram once you start printing seriously
- Color consistency between batches of any budget filament is a real thing
- No filament is a fix for a machine that is not leveled
Skip this one if
Skip it if the part you are making will live outdoors or in a car. That is a PETG job, not a PLA one, and no PLA brand changes that.

Overture High Speed PETG

The second spool, not the first. PETG is what you move to when a part has to survive a hot car, a bit of flex or the outdoors — and it is fussier about stringing and bed adhesion than PLA in exchange.

What it actually is
PETG is a tougher, slightly flexible plastic that tolerates heat far better than PLA. It prints hotter, sticks harder to the plate, and strings more. The same material family as a drinks bottle.
Does it fit this page?
Bambu Lab rates the A1 series ideal for PETG, and the A1's 100 C plate is the specification that keeps a large PETG part stuck down. The mini's 80 C plate is adequate for smaller parts.

What is good about it
- Handles heat that would soften a PLA part into uselessness
- Tougher and less brittle than PLA, so it survives being dropped
- +/- 0.02 mm published tolerance, the same as Overture's PLA
- A 30 - 300 mm/s published speed range that fits current fast machines
What is not
- Strings between features far more readily than PLA
- 230 - 260 C means your printer's hot end has to be rated for it — the A1 mini's 300 C ceiling is fine, some older machines are not
- It can stick to a smooth PEI plate hard enough to damage the surface
- Absorbs moisture from the air faster than PLA, so an open spool goes off
Skip this one if
Skip it as a first spool. Learn what a good first layer looks like in PLA before you add a material that sticks too well and strings between everything. PETG is a solution to a problem you have not had yet.

+−Do I have to use Bambu filament in a Bambu printer?
No. Any mainstream 1.75 mm filament works. The house spools carry a tag the printer reads to set the profile automatically, which is a convenience rather than a requirement.
+−Can the Bambu A1 print ABS?
Bambu Lab lists ABS, ASA, PC, PA, PET and fiber-reinforced filaments as not recommended on both the A1 and the A1 mini. Both are open frames and cannot hold the chamber heat those materials need.
+−What is the best filament for the A1 mini specifically?
PLA, and the 80 °C plate ceiling is worth knowing about for PETG: fine on small and medium parts, riskier as the footprint grows. The full-size A1’s 100 °C plate is the one that holds large PETG parts down.
